In 2001 a phenomenon called Pop Idol – a music talent reality show was taking shape in the UK. Thousands of miles away in Mumbai – a similar game changing event in the field of music was taking place – minus the “reality show format” and cameras.
In March 2001 over 1,000 aspiring artists from all over India were interviewed. 250 short listed candidates were sifted through to select five boys to form India’s first boy band – A Band of Boys (ABOB).
Mentored by Colonial Cousins (Leslie Lewis & Hariharan) and put through a gruelling 16 hours of training everyday that included Hindustani classical music (Vocal) training, physical training and body toning, dance and aerobic rehearsals ABOB was ready for the launch. On the basis of their selection and the training process, ABOB were nominated as MTV's Ubharta Sitara (Rising Stars) - an honour never before given to any artiste without an album or music video to their credit! After extensive training of more than two years, Yeh Bhi Woh Bhi, the debut album of the band was launched in September 2002 by Grammy award nominated singer Asha Bhonsle. The hit single Meri Neend propelled the album to the top of the charts and album sold 1,00,000 units in just two weeks of its launch. Three more singles from the album – Gori, She Drives Me Crazy & Ishq hit the top of the charts.
By 2002, ABOB was not just performing in India but had found an audience worldwide. The band completed a successful tour of Europe and South East Asia that year.
In 2003, ABOB took a break from show performances and temporarily shifted base to Indonesia for a couple of months where their debut film Kiss Kis Ko was shot. Based on their lives and music the film made them household names in India. The film was acquired by Eros International and was released in 2004.
In 2006, medient relinquished the rights to the band and handed over the management to the band itself. With more than 1000 national and international gigs under their belt, ABOB continues to rock the audience worldwide.
